Relationship Support

Burnout can take an incredible toll on our relationships. We are often not ourselves when we’re burned out. Because of that, we might find ourselves behaving in ways that are difficult or even hurtful to those around us, and/ or we might be susceptible to poor treatment ourselves because we are feeling vulnerable.

Taking care of our own mental health is one of the most important things we can do to build healthier relationships (see the Mental Health section of the Crisis Support Page).

Couples counselling can also be a good place to start if you find that burnout is taking its toll on your intimate relationship/s. A couples counsellor can help you understand your ‘conflict dance’ (the unhelpful patterns between you), and give you tools to develop a greater understanding of yourselves and each other.

If you know you have a pattern of chronically overgiving to others (a common cause of burnout), you may want to consider looking into ‘codependency’. A good place to start would be the book, Codependent No More by Melody Beattie, or the free 12 Step Programme, Codependents Anonymous.

If you are experiencing abuse of any kind, you can call The Freephone National Domestic Abuse Helpline, run by Refuge on 0808 2000 247 for free at any time, day or night. The staff will offer confidential, non-judgemental information and support. Here you are can also find a more comprehensive list of help available.
