Physical Health Support

Whatever you are able to do to reduce the causes of burnout in your life will undoubtedly benefit your health overall, but sometimes we develop or discover health implications due to burnout that take on a life of their own. These will then need treatment separately from more generalised burnout support.

Some common physical symptoms of burnout include; repeated colds and viruses, unexplained aches and pains, heart palpitations, migraines, digestive issues, insomnia, and back pain. It is important to get any symptoms checked by a medical professional to rule out anything more sinister, as well as to see what treatment options might be available.

Here are some example burnout-related physical health diagnoses where seeking a diagnosis through your local GP surgery might enable you to access treatment and support…

  • Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is very common in burnout as our digestive systems begin to shut down under stress in order to conserve energy, resulting in a range of digestive discomfort and/ or pain.

  • A diagnosis of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS/ME), is appropriate for some burnout sufferers, especially if symptoms such as brain fog and exhaustion show little to no sign of improvement despite extended periods of rest. For existing CFS sufferers, burnout can increase the severity of their CFS.

  • Some burnout sufferers experience insomnia, being unable to sleep and/ or rest due to stress and overwhelm.

If your physical symptoms are impacting your ability to work, you may choose to talk to your employer about reasonable adjustments they could make, such as providing flexible hours or equipment to help you feel more comfortable.
